The Opening of the 2013 – 2014 Application Cycle
and Re-Applicant Information

The 2013–2014 cycle of NursingCAS will open on April 15, 2013. If you wish to apply to any programs with a deadline of June 1, 2013 or later (with the exception of programs posted on  2013 - 2014 Deadline Guide), you will need to use the 2013–2014 NursingCAS application. This application will be made available to you on April 15, 2013 via www.nursingcas.org.

This announcement should not cause you any alarm. You should use your current application and NursingCAS account to apply to any schools with deadlines between now and May 31, 2013. Please note any exceptions are posted below the deadline guide.

Plan Ahead: What Does it Mean to be a Re-Applicant?

Note this information is only relevant to applicants who are interested in re-using their application data from the previous application cycle to apply to programs during the 2013–2014 application cycle.

On April 15, 2013, any applicant who was verified between August 15, 2011 and April 1, 2013 can be a “re-applicant”. To check to see if you are verified, log into your application and under the “Quick Status” menu, click on “GPA Calculations” or use this link, https://portal.nursingcas.org/applicants12/index.cgi?rm=status_gpa. If you have GPA Calculations, then you are verified.

If you know or think you might like to apply to another program via NursingCAS during the 2013–2014 application cycle (which will enable you to apply to programs with deadlines of June 1, 2013 or later), then you should make sure that you e-submit your application and send in all official transcripts in time to be verified by April 1, 2013 if you haven’t already.

If you are not verified by April 1, 2013, then you have until July 1, 2013 to e-submit your 2012–2013 application and all of your official transcripts in order to be verified to be included in the last round of archiving to be a re-applicant on July 15, 2013. To clarify, if you are not verified by April 1, 2013 then you have until July 1, 2013 to be verified in order to be eligible to be a re-applicant during the 2013–2014 NursingCAS application cycle.  If you are not verified by July 1, 2013 and then choose to apply to a program during the 2013–2014 NursingCAS application cycle, you will have to re-enter in all of your application data and send in all of your transcripts again.

Frequently Asked Questions about the Re-Applicant Feature

Q: Who can be a re-applicant?

A: A student is eligible to be a re-applicant if they are verified, meaning they have e-submitted their application by April 1, 2013, two weeks prior to the launch of the 2013–2014 cycle, and all of their official transcripts have been received in time for NursingCAS to verify their information and calculate GPAs. Any verified applicants who applied between August 15, 2011 and April 1, 2013 will be eligible to be an immediate re-applicant to the 2013–2014 cycle when it launches on April 15, 2013. Any verified applicant who applies to a program posted on the 2012 – 2013 application after April 1, 2013 will be eligible to be a re-applicant on July 15, 2013 after the second round of archiving occurs. By doing two rounds of archiving, we will ensure the most number of applicants are eligible to be re-applicants in the 2013–2014 cycle.

Q: What does it mean to be “verified”?

A: Applicants must e-submit their application, submit their payment, all official transcripts must be received, and the course work and schools attended sections must be completed and accurate in order to be "verified". Click here to view more information on verification or view a short video.

Q: What does it mean to be a re-applicant?

A: Generally everything on the application is carried over for re-applicants except for references (most schools would prefer applicants get new references each cycle), professional experience information (this section will be overhauled for the next cycle), and personal statements (most schools encourage applicants to write new ones each cycle they apply). To clarify:

  1. Re-applicants can import their information from the previous cycle.
  2. Most application fields and verified transcripts (transcripts containing course work calculated into the GPA by NursingCAS will be imported into the new application).
  3. All verified course work entered in by the applicant will carry over. Note any “in progress” course work will not be carried over.
  4. Personal Statements are not carried over, and NursingCAS strongly advises applicants to compose new personal statements in the next cycle if they are a re-applicant.
  5. Letters of reference, payments, and unverified transcripts will not be carried over and must be re-submitted in the next cycle.

Q: What if the program I wish to apply to has a rolling deadline?

A: If the program has a rolling deadline then we recommend that you e-submit your application and all transcripts by April 1, 2013. That way you can be verified in time for the launch of the 2013–2014 NursingCAS application cycle and if you decide to apply to other programs, you can be a “re-applicant” immediately and use your same application data to apply to other programs rather than starting from scratch. If you wait until after April 1, 2013 to apply to a program with a rolling deadline then you will need to e-submit your application and all official transcripts in order to be verified by July 1, and you can be a “re-applicant” on July 15, 2013 to the 2013–2014 NursingCAS application cycle.

Q: Do re-applicants pay a fee to designate, e-submit, and apply to a program posted in the 2013–2014 application cycle?

A: Yes, re-applicants and any new applicants who e-submit during the 2013–2014 cycle (after April 15, 2013) will pay the NursingCAS fee. Undergraduate fees are $45 for the first school the student designates, and $30 for each additional school the student designates. Graduate fees are $65 for the first school the student designates, and $35 for each additional school the applicant designates. If the applicant applies to the same school within the same cycle, they do not pay an additional fee.

Q: How does the re-applicant process work internally at NursingCAS?

A: In order to maintain the integrity of the applicant data, the archiving of information that needs to be carried over for verified applicants to be a re-applicant in the new cycle takes two weeks. Prior to a launch of a new cycle, the verified applicant database is saved in an archive process and then NursingCAS staff re-maps the applicant database to the new cycle, cleans up the data, and does testing to ensure that there are no issues.

Helpful Guide for Applicants on When to Apply:
Note if you have not yet created your NursingCAS account and you wish to apply to program with a deadline between June 1, 2013 - April 2014 then you should wait to create your NursingCAS account until April 15, 2013 when the 2013 - 2014 cycle launches. Exceptions are posted on  2013 - 2014 Deadline Guide.
